Salem Regional Medical Center Announces Launch of New Cancer-Fighting Technology
May 24, 2018A powerful and highly sophisticated radiation therapy treatment is now available at the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center (UHSCC) at Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC), to help area residents in their fight against cancer. Offering tumor targeting treatment with pinpoint accuracy and precision, the UHSCC at SRMC has opened its new Radiation Therapy department, which features the region's most advanced cancer fighting technology.
"Our new Varian VitalBeamTM technology provides state-of-the-art radiation therapy to treat many different types of cancers; including those in sensitive areas such as the abdomen, liver, lung, breast, prostate, and head and neck," explained Radiation Oncologist William F. Demas, M.D. "This highly advanced system targets tumors with accuracy, precision and speed. The specialized technology focuses powerful radiation directly on the cancer while minimizing exposure of the surrounding healthy tissue."
World-Class Cancer CareSRMC has collaborated with the UH Seidman Cancer Center to offer a full complement of medical and radiation oncology services locally, and ensure that patients will receive state-of-the-art care, innovative opportunities for treatment, and an extraordinary experience of care that offers renewed hope in their battle against cancer.
Medical Oncology: On November 6, 2017, the UHSCC at SRMC opened to provide medical oncology services in SRMC's recently expanded Cancer & Infusion Center. Ayla Kessler, M.D., is the medical director, and joined Zoraida Mendez, M.D., to provide medical hematology and oncology care.
Radiation Therapy: William Demas, M.D., and Michael Seider, M.D., provide radiation oncology services in the UHSCC at SRMC's new Radiation Therapy department, located in the Salem Medical Arts Building at 2020 East State Street, where the Varian VitalBeamTM linear accelerator has recently been installed to provide the latest radiation treatment options.
"Patients undergoing cancer treatment planning will also benefit from the collaboration among our local medical and radiation oncologists, specialty physicians and 14 multi-disciplinary teams of experts at UHSCC's main campus, who work together to develop our patients' treatment plans," added Anita Hackstedde, SRMC President/CEO.
